A New Way to Recycle PET Bottles

Environmentally friendly pipes made of recycled PET

“Showa Eco Pipes®”, produced and sold by Showa Denko Kenzai K.K., a subsidiary of Showa Denko K.K., have been adopted for the first time as building materials for a newly constructed condominium in Niigata, Japan.
“Showa Eco Pipes®” are produced as follows:

1. PET bottles are crushed into flakes and mixed with a special modifier.
2. The resulting mixture reacts under high temperature.
3. Subsequently the material is extrusion molded into its new form.

Compared to the ordinary production technology of solid vinyl chloride pipes, this production technology consumes only one third of energy, and contributes to the mitigation of carbon dioxide emissions. Another merit of this production technology is the fact that no toxic chlorine gasses are released during incineration. For these reasons the “Showa Eco Pipes®” are certified with the “Eco Mark” of the Japan Environment Association.

Showa Denko Kenzai K.K. supplies two types of eco pipes: the standard type, which features the same specifications as ordinary, non-eco pipes, and a fire-resistant two-layer type, which is coated with cement mortar.

Dia Kensetsu Co., Ltd., a Japanese construction company based in Tokyo, recognized that the quality and environmental properties of “Showa Eco Pipes®” met their concept of ideal house building, and therefore decided to use them in their newly constructed condominium building in Niigata. The fire-resistant two-layer pipes were used for drainpipes inside the house and the standard pipes were used for eaves gutters.

In the future we will focus our marketing efforts to our customers, who are interested in the global environment, letting them know more about the merits of using “Showa Eco Pipes®”.
Furthermore, the Showa Denko Group also makes efforts to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, by introducing new facilities and equipments and developing new technologies like LED’s and fuel cells.
